The
Great Drain Game
The Goal is
to bring environmental education into schools.
The ARC's Pollution
Control Team's interactive stormwater education game - the Great
Drain Game (GDG) had a successful 2004. The GDG has been run at
some 60 events.
The game consists
of life-sized models representing the two different kinds of drains
- sewer & stormwater. The aim of the game is for the player to get
rid of the household pollutant they are given in the appropriate
manner, so they have to choose where for example soapy wash water
should be disposed of - down the sewer system or the stormwater.

Wash your car on the driveway or on the grass?
Children
respond well to this sort of teaching and by the time they have
had a go at the game the message is well ingrained. The children
are rewarded for answering questions correctly by receiving a chocolate
fish. If the answers are incorrect information is provided correcting
misinformation and through physically being shown why the answer
is wrong. The child can then play the game again. The message that
the game reinforces is that the stormwater system is for rainwater
only and because it's done in a positive and fun environment everybody
involved learns something.
The Great
Drain Game
Fun for all ages, the Great Drain Game is an initiative developed
by graphic design artist, Nikki Butler, in close collaboration with
the Pollution Control Team from the ARC. |
