Organic Wine from Waiheke
Awaroa
Vineyard was born in 1992 when seven partners got together and purchased
120 acres at the top of the Awaawaroa Valley in the center of Waiheke
Island. The focus of the group is to combine a commercial organic
enterprise while remaining sensitive to protecting the land and
ecosystems.
Awaroa
aims for a ripe, concentrated style of red wine. This means low
crop levels, plenty of sunshine on the grapes and leaving the grapes
on the vine as long as we can. The grapes are harvested and then
gently crushed by foot. The fermenting wine is plunged by hand 6-8
times a day, then a gentle press into mostly new oak barrels for
the next 12 months or so before bottling.
Michael
Cooper Wine Guide:
“The 2006 vintage was hand picked from ‘organic’
vineyards and matured in French oak casks (50 per cent new). Deep
and youthful in colour with lots of spicy French oak on the nose
it has good density of fresh, vibrant, blackcurrant-like flavours
and a hint of herbs, in a savoury firm style, well worth cellaring.”
